How many ways to play poker are there?

Poker is a game that has captivated millions of people around the world. Its popularity is due, in large part, to the versatility of the game, which offers a variety of modalities, which adapt to different tastes, levels of experience and preferences.

Although Texas Hold’em poker is the most widely played and known variant worldwide, there are hundreds of poker games that differ in their rules, number of cards, use of jokers, and other characteristics. Each mode has its own dynamics, strategies, and levels of complexity, which makes it unique and attractive to each specific audience. In this article, we will present some of the most popular modes, from the classic ones to the most innovative ones.

Texas Hold’em

As previously mentioned, Texas Hold’em is the undisputed “king” of modern poker and is the best known form of the game worldwide. It is played with two hole cards for each player and five community cards that are revealed in three rounds: the flop, the turn, and the river. Players can bet, call, or fold in each round. The objective is to form the best possible hand with the two hole cards and the five community cards.

Omaha is a variant of Texas Hold’em played with four hole cards for each player and five community cards. By having more hole cards, players are more likely to form strong hands, which increases the complexity of the game and the level of strategy.

Poker Draw

Draw poker is one of the oldest and simplest forms of the game. Each player receives five cards and has the opportunity to discard one or more cards to receive new cards from the deck. The objective is to form the best possible hand with the final five cards.

Poker Stud

In Stud poker, players are dealt cards face up and face down throughout the round. As cards are dealt, players can bet and increase the pot. The objective is to form the best possible hand with the five visible cards.

Razz is a form of poker in which the objective is to form the lowest possible hand. Cards from Ace to 10 have their usual value, while J, Q, K, and A are worth 1 point. The player with the lowest hand wins the pot.

Seven Card Stud

Seven Card Stud is a variant of Stud poker, in which each player is dealt seven cards throughout the round. The objective is to form the best possible hand with the seven cards, but only five of them can be used to compete.

Eight or Better

Eight or Better is similar to Razz, but in this case, the lowest hand must be a pair of eights or higher to win the pot. If no player has a pair of eights or higher, the highest hand wins the pot.

Badugi is a unique game that combines elements of Razz and Eight or Better. Players are dealt four cards and must form two hands: a high hand and a low hand. The high hand must be at least a pair of eights, while the low hand must be the lowest possible. The player with the best combination of high hand and low hand wins the pot.

Horse is a poker variant that combines five different poker variants: Hold’em, Omaha, Razz, Seven Card Stud, and Eight or Better (H.O.R.S.E.). Players play one round of each mode, and the player with the most points at the end of the tournament is the winner.

Caribbean Poker

Caribbean Stud Poker is a variant where the game is played against the house instead of other players. Players and the dealer (a person hired by the casino to direct the game and deal the cards) are dealt five cards face down. The objective is to obtain a better hand than the dealer. It is important to note that bluffing does not exist in this mode.

These are just a few of the hundreds of poker games that exist. Each one of them offers a unique and challenging experience, which makes poker an inexhaustible game full of possibilities.
