888 Poker is currently one of the most recognized online poker platforms worldwide, but few know the fascinating story of its founders, two pairs of Israeli brothers who, starting from scratch and with no prior experience in the gaming world, built a digital empire that would transform the online poker industry forever. This article will learn a little insight into the fascinating story of entrepreneurship, technological vision, and business strategy that transformed a small startup in Gibraltar into an online gaming giant.

From dentist to online gaming mogul

The story of 888 Poker begins with Aaron Shaked, an Israeli dentist whose destiny would change during a trip to a dental conference in Monte Carlo in 1997. Fascinated by the casino atmosphere, Aaron imagined bringing that experience to the emerging world of the internet. Together with his brother Avi, they decided to embark on this project despite their complete lack of knowledge about casino games.

Their learning process was unusual, as they traveled to the nearest casino in Taba, Sinai, where they spent weeks meticulously studying the rules of blackjack, roulette, and poker. To realize their vision, the Shaked brothers partnered with Shay and Ron Ben-Yitzhak, two talented programmers who would develop the technological platform. Together, they founded Virtual Holdings Limited, based in Gibraltar, the parent company of what would later become the giant 888 Holdings.

From Casino-on-Net to a Global Empire

The first major milestone came in 1997 with the launch of Casino-on-Net, one of the world’s first online casinos. However, the real leap forward occurred in 2002 when they expanded their operation with Pacific Poker, which would later become the well-known 888 Poker brand. Growth was exponential, culminating in 2005 with a pivotal moment for the company: its successful IPO on the London Stock Exchange, where it reached a valuation of $1.5 billion. This milestone not only made the four founders billionaires but also provided them with the resources and credibility necessary to expand globally. The shareholding structure at the time showed the Shaked brothers holding 50% of the shares and the Ben-Yitzhak brothers holding 11%, distributing the remainder to other investors.

Global vision from the beginning

From the outset, the founders pursued aggressive international expansion, obtaining licenses in key markets such as the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, Denmark, and Romania. This strategy allowed them to comply with local regulations and operate legally, adapt the platform to the cultural and linguistic preferences of each region, and gain legitimacy against less-regulated competitors.

The impact of the UIGEA on the US

The road to success was not without its obstacles. In 2006, the passage of the Unified Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) in the United States dealt a severe blow to the company, forcing it to withdraw from what was then its most lucrative market. The consequences were immediate and severe, as 888 Poker lost approximately 70% of its revenue at the time, requiring a complete business restructuring to focus on other markets such as Europe. It wasn’t until 2013, with changes in legislation in some states, that the platform was able to gradually return to the United States, establishing operations in Nevada, New Jersey, and Delaware.

What happened to the founders after their success?

The founder’s destinies took diverse and, in some cases, tragic paths. Aaron Shaked passed away in 2010 after a long illness, leaving behind a significant philanthropic legacy with millions of dollars in donations to charitable causes in Israel and abroad. His brother Avi Shaked turned to politics and activism, even offering the Palestinian prime minister the extraordinary sum of $1 billion in 2003 to sign a peace agreement, an offer that was rejected.

For his part, Shay Ben-Yitzhak, the technical genius behind the original software, met a tragic end in 2020 when the ultralight plane he was piloting crashed in Israel, although his 11-year-old son managed to survive with minor injuries. Ron Ben-Yitzhak, the least public of the four, opted for a discreet life, enjoying his fortune in private.

The Founder`s Legacy at 888 Poker Today

Despite changes and tragedies, the founder’s original vision lives on within the platform. 888 Poker has maintained its innovative spirit, pioneering features like webcam tables to humanize the online gaming experience and developing one of the first mobile poker apps in 2013. Today, it operates in over 20 countries with licenses in regulated jurisdictions like Gibraltar and the United Kingdom, hosting prestigious events like the $300,000 Super High Roller Bowl and the XL Championships Series, one of the largest online tournament series.

The story of the founders of 888 Poker is an inspiring testament to how vision, risk-taking, and teamwork can transform a seemingly simple idea into a global empire. They proved that even without prior experience in a sector, it is possible to revolutionize it with innovation and perseverance. Their legacy continues to influence the online poker industry, keeping 888 Poker one of the world’s leading platforms.
