Five myths about poker players

Cinco mitos sobre los jugadores de póker

Due to its global diffusion and cultural influence, poker is surrounded by some myths and popular beliefs, especially with regard to its participants. In this article, we will share some myths about poker players.

Poker players have unhealthy habits

Due to the popularity of some poker movies and some disreputable poker rooms , some people think that most poker players have unhealthy habits, such as: drinking too much alcohol, smoking too much, taking drugs, sleeping too little. and eat junk food. While some people may have these behaviors, the truth is that many poker players have healthy habits.

For example, many professional players adopt routines beneficial to their health such as exercising regularly, following a balanced diet, meditating, reading books about poker and sleeping well to be more productive and competitive during the game, in addition to having the ability to control their emotions.

Poker players tend to be cheaters

Poker has a series of rules and regulations, which must be followed by all participants in the game. However, as with any competitive activity, there are some people who may try to cheat, but this does not represent the majority of players.

Many poker players, especially advanced and professional players, highly value ethics and fair play. For these players, poker is a game of skill and strategy, and cheating not only goes against their principles but could also ruin their reputation or career path. In the poker community, reputation is crucial, so being labeled a “cheater” can irreparably damage a player’s image, affecting their ability to participate in future tournaments and obtain sponsors.

Cheating in poker, especially in regulated environments such as casinos or online tournaments, carries a high risk since casinos and online platforms have different security and supervision systems to detect cheating and fraud, and the consequences can be serious. Severe penalties for violators, including a lifetime ban from the venue/platform, fines, and, in some cases, sanctions or legal problems.

Differences between skill and trap

It is important to note that some novice players may confuse advanced strategies (or opponent reading techniques) with cheating. Poker is a game of skill and experienced players use their knowledge of probabilities, human behavior and strategy to win. This is not cheating; It’s part of the same game.

You have to have money to play poker

Some people think that everyone who plays poker must use real money, however, there are several platforms where you can play for free. However, this form of play has its limits, especially at intermediate or advanced levels.

While playing with play money can help a new person learn the rules and become familiar with the game, the player will not be able to level up (or become an expert) if they do not play with real money. The real experience is usually obtained by placing real bets.

When there is no real money at stake, the player does not feel the same psychological pressure that is experienced in a game with real stakes. Decision-making changes when you know that you can win or lose money. Likewise, in real money poker, players take themselves more seriously and apply more advanced strategies. Additionally, learning how to manage your bankroll (the money you have available to play) is crucial in real money poker. You cannot practice this skill without actually betting.

To play poker you have to be lucky

Some people think that to play poker you have to be lucky. While luck plays an important role in the short term, in the long term, skill and strategy are essential and end up prevailing. The best players make decisions based on probabilities and analysis. Poker requires different technical skills, such as reading opponents, calculating odds, and bankroll management. These skills are more important than luck, especially in the long term.

Most poker players are compulsive gamblers

While poker is a game of skill that incorporates betting, not all players develop compulsive behaviors. To understand this concept, it is important to distinguish between recreational players, professional players, and players with compulsive behavior.

People who play poker for fun and entertainment aim to enjoy the game; they generally bet money that they are willing to lose without this negatively affecting their personal finances.

On the other hand, for professional players, poker is a career or a source of income. Generally these people have a disciplined approach and manage their money (bankroll) carefully to minimize risks. Although in some cases they can gamble large amounts, they are not necessarily compulsive gamblers; since your success depends on skill, strategy, emotional control and management of your resources.

Finally, we have compulsive gamblers, or people who have difficulty controlling their gambling impulses, which can lead to financial and personal problems. These gamblers may bet more than they can afford to lose and continue gambling even when they know it is harming them.
